Interesting article.

Emtel should have been more aggressive in its publicity initiatives. It should have exploited its first player advantage to prevent MT-Orange from gaining such a large market share. Cellplus turning Orange was another opportunity for Emtel to re-position itself as the 'Mauritian' service provider, and get back all the lost patriotic customers. But they did nothing!

As I see it, Emtel is focusing on a niche market, i.e Private sector businesses, whereas Orange together with its Public sector customers (for obvious reasons) also has the majority of the mass market.

I foresee that in the mass market segment, the minority who are on Emtel will gradually move to Orange, because calling other people will be more expensive if they stay on Emtel. This is due to the fact that calling a different service provider is 3x more expensive, and given that more people are on Orange.

Thinking inside the box does not mean new ideas cannot be created. I am not talking about the things that can be generated through the thinking process, but I am talking about the thinking process itself.

The term ‘thinking outside the box’ is just an illusion because the way our mind is constructed and makes sense of the world around us means it can only generate thought when it thinks within a context. The mind cannot think from scratch. The basic idea of thinking in french, creole or english means we are already isolating the thinking process within a context, where we will inevitably be limited to the boundaries of that context. Communication/language is the base of all contexts.

Its impossible to generate an idea without having preliminary information and knowledge. A creative idea is the connection of 2 planes of thought that were previously not connected and had not relation.

1 existing idea + 1 existing idea = 1 new idea.

When connecting them together, it is very important to know if the customers will be able to connect these 2 ideas in their mind and realize the product/service has a use value. This is where the inexistent relevance starts to exist. Relevance does not fall from the sky but it is established by assigning logic to things that previously did not have a rationale.

The reason why there are great inventions that flop and simple inventions that succeed, or vice versa, is because inventors fail to understand that customers need to be able to make the connections in their mind in order to see the logic in a new product/service.

Business strategies (most of them) are based on frameworks that have one 1 thing in common - connections - exploring connections, establishing connections, sustaining connections and improving connections. To be able to establish connections, the planes of thought should already exist.

Emtel is provides more facilities (features) compelling to the youth culture and businesses. However, the youth culture prefers Orange because it's the National brand. People from the old times still refer to mobile phones as "Emtel." My guess is that Emtel prefers to be the ultimate telephony company subscribed by businesses, and the latter do get what they pay for.

There's also a meme among the locals. "emtel pa gagne rezo" It's pure FUD. The network works fine. I won't mention the entire list of features which can be obtained from the web site.

Note: I'm a subscriber to Emtel and Orange. Emtel gives me a lot more. I'm NOT a fanboy though.

Which one do you use and prefer?

That's the idea - to create something which doesn't exist and which isn't relevant to the real world, not even applicable, until it is made to be so - think of business strategies here (you create a framework to sustain your invention and make it used by many because it's "cool" and hopefully in time, users will find it useful."
Thinking outside the box + business strategy work well together.

Hi
I have been away from Mauritius for long time, I am now living in South Africa.I never realise that people are still living in such poverty in the year 2008 in Mauritius.
Where is all the money going, how much can it cost our Government to develop this area. I wish those people could stand together to make things work for a better life. Those staying there should be one team to be able to fight for their rights.

Thanks for the comment Richa. Workaholic is not the the appropriate connotation in my case. You’re right. Its true that I feel very comfortable with my work and more than working hard, it is about finding personal satisfaction and achieving something. The hardest part is sustaining this desire through time.

you dont call yourself a workaholic if you're enjoying your work. honestly speaking, we're the lucky ones dont you think so? we have a job that we love even til we cant define them as work anymore.

i work 10-7. after 7, i cant wait to pack my bag to go off, so i can catch the earliest transport to go back home, take a shower, settle down, and start my work again while eating my dinner. its the enthusiasm and the wants to get things moving, so we can see good results faster than anyone else.

keep it up. just when you are down and think work is plainly just work, think that you're not alone. we will get there together :)

You seem very comfortable with your work, it is very enviable, it doesnt happen to many people. I think "workaholic" terms people who are overworked, stressed out and unhappy. It isn't at all your case. Maybe people are missing you in the social platform, but your work cannot be a cause of concern to your loved ones. I think the right word would be "hardworker". Thumbs up
